A team of Indian scientists from IARI and Punjab Agricultural University have developed a new variety of rice named “Shakti-21” that requires 40% less water and matures 20 days earlier than traditional varieties. It has high protein content and is resistant to heatwaves and certain pests. The government plans to promote it in drought-prone states like Maharashtra, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh. Trials have shown increased yield even under limited irrigation conditions. The rice is also suitable for direct seeding, saving labor costs for farmers.
